STITCHES 101: HERRINGBONE SINGLE CROCHET STITCH

The herringbone stitch is a great way to add an interesting texture to your projects! If you can single crochet you can easily do this stitch. Scroll below for a quick tutorial.

The herringbone single crochet stitch is a two row repeat stitch. When working with this stitch, you will repeat rows 1 and 2 to create the beautiful herringbone texture.

Please note that each row starts with a regular single crochet stitch ( or reverse single crochet stitch) as the first stitch. Then proceed working in the herringbone stitch.

Row 1 (Step by step pictures and video instructions included)

Make one single crochet in the first stitch.

Insert hook under the vertical bar of the previous single crochet stitch from right to left.

Insert into the next stitch.

Complete a single crochet stitch ( Pull up a loop. Yarn over. Pull through all loops on the hook.)

Continue working in the herringbone single crochet stitch to the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2 (Step by step pictures and video instructions included)

Bring working yarn to the front of your work (side closest to you).

Complete a reverse single crochet stitch in the first stitch (refer to video below).

Insert hook through the vertical bar on the backside of the work from right to left.

Insert the hook into the next stitch from back to front.

Complete a reverse single crochet stitch. (Pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.)

Continue working in the reverse herringbone single crochet stitch to the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn.

You can alter the appearance of the stitch by using different weights of yarn, changing the hook size or even working with multiple strands at once. (The patterns in the Amina Collection are crocheted with two strands of heavy worsted weight yarn held together.)
